Day 1 – Tue 10 Nov

... at 01.25 and taken to our hotel. The morning is free to adjust our body clocks, then after lunch we venture into Delhi, capital city of the Republic of India. We take a tour of some of the sights of British interest in Old Delhi including a visit to St James’ Church, commissioned by Colonel James Skinner in 1836 and the oldest church in Delhi. It survived the 1857 uprising and is still in use today. In the evening we’ll be taken to a nearby restaurant to celebrate the start of the tour.

Included: Transfer to hotel, breakfast, sightseeing tour, dinner, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals.

Day 2 – Wed 11 Nov

This morning we take a coach tour of New Delhi which will include a look at India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President of India’s official residence and a truly impressive building, both designed by English architect Edwin Lutyens. After lunch at a suitable colonial-era venue, the rest of the day is free to explore this vibrant city.

Included: Breakfast, city coach tour, lunch, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals.

Day 3 – Thu 12 Nov

We take a 2-hour flight from Delhi to Bagdogra in West Bengal, arriving at 1215, from where we’re taken north to Darjeeling. This area of India is famous for its tea, and since the East India Company introduced it from China in the mid 1800s India has become the largest producer of tea in the world. So on the way to Darjeeling we’ll visit a local tea estate where we’ll be shown how tea is grown and processed, and where we’ll be able to ‘take afternoon tea’ in much the same way as generations of British officials.

Included:Breakfast, airport transfer, flight to Bagdogra and road transport to Darjeeling, tea estate visit, dinner, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals.

Day 4 – Fri 13 Nov

The day will be free in Darjeeling – a classic British hill station, built to create a home-from-home for British Indian residents. There’s lots to do in Darjeeling – catch the steam-hauled train to Ghum and back, visit the Tibetan Refugee Centre, the bazaars, the Mountaineering Institute, catch up with emails, send postcards, or just look at the stunning view – we can help you decide.

Included: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, accommodation. Not included: Sightseeing, steam train, incidentals.

Day 5 – Sat 14 Nov

In the late morning we we return by road back down the hill to Siliguri, the second city of West Bengal. To reach the hill station of Darjeeling the British built the narrow-gauge Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in the early 1880s. Remarkably this railway is still operating much as it did then, and In the evening we’ll be having dinner on the small steam train as it runs up through the forest to Rangtong. Our coach will return us to our hotel.

Included: Breakfast, road transport to Siliguri, evening dinner on the DHR, return transport to hotel. Not included: other meals, incidentals.
