Thursday 7 January 2010
In the morning, we’ll take a chartered tram ride through the northern part of the city – this gives a great insight into the way this lively city works – you are part of the crowds without having to fight your way through them! After lunch, we’ll take a short walking tour through the city centre to see the City Centre, cross the river by ferry and see Howrah station, one of India’s busiest.
Included: breakfast, tram ride, museum visit, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals
Friday 8 January 2010
A day out to Shantipur. An early start has us on the six o’clock from Sealdah station out to Shantipur. We then ride the full length of the line to Nabadwip Ghat, and back to Krishnanagar, for the suburban ride back into Calcutta, where we should arrive at about 1520. There should then be time for a refreshing mango lassi at the Oberoi! For those who wish, dinner should be at the Bar-B-Q restaurant – excellent Chinese cuisine
Please note that the Calcutta suburban trains are usually very crowded, second class only and have plain wooden seats.
Included: breakfast, transfers, rail travel, accommodation. Not included: other meals and incidentals
Saturday 9 January 2010
It’s another early start – we need to catch the 0700 flight from Calcutta to Dibrugarh in North-east Assam, due in at 0830. We’ll be met with a coach which will take us (with a stop for a late breakfast/early lunch) on the journey to Digboi. We’ll stop at Tinsukia to see the plinthed metre-gauge YP Pacific, and check whether anything remains in the old steam dump, once home to YP’s and YG’s just as they were when withdrawn twenty years ago. At Digboi, we’ll visit the Indian Oil Company’s Museum – we found this on our last visit, and it was absolutely fascinating! We expect to stay at their Guest House, and we will try and arrange a visit to one of their Executive bungalows and a very period golf club.
Please note that the Guest House has only basic facilities, and the food, whilst freshly prepared and hygienic, will not have the variety one would expect in a larger hotel.
Included: packed breakfast, coach transfers, flight, museum visit, dinner, accommodation. Not included: other meals and incidentals
