We will meet at Heathrow’s Terminal 3 at 1800 ready to catch the Jet Airways flight at 2105.

Included: Flight, meals on flight. Not included: other meals, travel to Heathrow.

Wednesday 6 January 2010

…arriving In Bombay at 1135. We transfer to the domestic terminal for the onward flight to Calcutta, where we arrive at 1940. We’ll be met by a coach to take us to the Peerless Hotel for a good night’s rest.

Included: coach transfers, accommodation. Not included: meals, incidentals.

Thursday 7 January 2010

In the morning, we’ll take a chartered tram ride through the northern part of the city – this gives a great insight into the way this lively city works – you are part of the crowds without having to fight your way through them! After lunch, we’ll take a short walking tour through the city centre to see the City Centre, cross the river by ferry and see Howrah station, one of India’s busiest.

Included: breakfast, tram ride, museum visit, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals

Friday 8 January 2010

A day out to Shantipur. An early start has us on the six o’clock from Sealdah station out to Shantipur. We then ride the full length of the line to Nabadwip Ghat, and back to Krishnanagar, for the suburban ride back into Calcutta, where we should arrive at about 1520. There should then be time for a refreshing mango lassi at the Oberoi! For those who wish, dinner should be at the Bar-B-Q restaurant – excellent Chinese cuisine

Please note that the Calcutta suburban trains are usually very crowded, second class only and have plain wooden seats.

Included: breakfast, transfers, rail travel, accommodation. Not included: other meals and incidentals

Saturday 9 January 2010

It’s another early start – we need to catch the 0700 flight from Calcutta to Dibrugarh in North-east Assam, due in at 0830. We’ll be met with a coach which will take us (with a stop for a late breakfast/early lunch) on the journey to Digboi. We’ll stop at Tinsukia to see the plinthed metre-gauge YP Pacific, and check whether anything remains in the old steam dump, once home to YP’s and YG’s just as they were when withdrawn twenty years ago. At Digboi, we’ll visit the Indian Oil Company’s Museum – we found this on our last visit, and it was absolutely fascinating! We expect to stay at their Guest House, and we will try and arrange a visit to one of their Executive bungalows and a very period golf club.

Please note that the Guest House has only basic facilities, and the food, whilst freshly prepared and hygienic, will not have the variety one would expect in a larger hotel.

Included: packed breakfast, coach transfers, flight, museum visit, dinner, accommodation. Not included: other meals and incidentals

Sunday 10 January 2010

After breakfast, we drive to Tipong, pausing at Margherita to see the plinthed steam engine at the Coal India offices. We have asked that both ‘B’ class and the Bagnall ‘David’ be in steam for us, but this is subject to availability and the goodwill of the Management there. ON the way back, we will call at Ledo brickworks to view the hulks of two Bagnalls and a steam boiler that powered the works machinery. Overnight is again at the Indian Oil Company’s Guest House.

Included breakfast, coach transfers, Tipong visit, lunch, dinner, accommodation. Not included: incidentals

Monday 11 January 2010

We’ll start the day as yesterday with a second visit to Tipong Colliery. The bus will leave Tipong at about 1500 to take us back to Dibrugarh to catch the 2015 overnight Rajdhani Express to…

Overnight will be in 2-tier air-conditioned berths on the train. Please ask if you’d like more information on this style of accommodation.

Included: breakfast, coach transfers, Tipong visit, lunch, rail travel, dinner on the train, overnight berth. Not included: other meals, incidentals.

Tuesday 12 January 2010

…Guwahati, where we arrive at 0600, and we’ll have refreshments served to us on the platform. The train leaves again at 0700, and takes us on to New Jalpaiguri, where arrival is due at 1300. We’ll be met and taken by coach to the Cindrella Hotel. After freshening up, we’ll go down to Siliguri Junction shed to meet the ‘B’ class (and NDM6) which runs on the Darjeeling line. At 1700, we’ll have one of our unique dining trains, with a ‘B’ class blasting up through the forests at dusk whilst we enjoy an excellent three course dinner on the train.

Included: breakfast, all rail travel, meals on the Rajdhani, dinner, accommodation. Not included: other meals, incidentals.
