Travel with Darjeeling Tours
Whether you’re a serious rail enthusiast, or want to experience fascinating countries and cultures on a guided tour with railways as a theme, we offer a range of tours to suit.
We are the leading experts in tours to all the narrow gauge lines in India and have added several new destinations to our programme including a fantastic three week trip to New Zealand – with steam from the north to the south of the country, and a week in Southern France visiting the scenic Vivarais and Chemin de Fer de la Mure railways.
Of course, we still have several tours to India to visit not only the several fascinating narrow gauge railways (Darjeeling, Shimla, Ooty and Matheran), but also the many other attractions that India has to offer such as the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra, the Red Fort in Delhi, the amazing Kerala backwaters, vibrant Mumbai (Bombay) or Mamallapuram’s ancient shore temple. What could me more magical than enjoying a four course dinner at dusk as you wind your way up through the forests of Sukna, hauled by a “B” Class steam engine, with the majestic Himalayas on the horizon?
Serious railfans can choose one of our more specialised tours to India or Colorado – as well as seeing the unique Darjeeling Himalayan Railway with its loops and “z” reverses and breathtaking scenery you can also visit the now-famous Tipong Colliery in Assam, a unique part of India, rarely visited by tourists. This operating colliery was visited by Michael Palin in his “Himalaya” documentary and it’s certainly worth a visit – even if you’re not rail-mad!
Why not visit Colorado in the autumn and see some really BIG trains as well as the Durango-Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec railways?
Why Darjeeling Tours?
All our tours are led by knowledgeable tour managers (all of whom are experienced travellers) who will do everything they can to make your trip interesting, enjoyable and memorable.
We don’t run standard “package” tours – whilst we do use coaches and flights to travel long distances, you won’t be hermetically sealed in a coach for long periods – in India for example, there will be times when you’ll be able to negotiate your own transport such as autorickshaw or taxi fares. And on train journeys what better opportunity to meet and talk to the locals – which is all part of the experience! Of course one of our tour managers will always be on hand to help. Many of our customers have travelled with us several times – and have become our friends: that’s all part of the Darjeeling Tours experience.
